What about the small businesses - I saw your web about the corporate guys (?) how about SEBA?

I have been involved in small business my entire career as a self employed, commissioned insurance and investment salesman. Small business people in Tucson must endure way too much baloney with the city, just trying to be successful. This city needs to correct those problems and be a catalyst for small businesses to flourish. ds

I presented your concept at our Sr. Staff meeting earlier this week. Folks found it intriguing and applaud you for thinking in big terms about promotion of the arts. There were however several potential concerns/questions raised I will articulate here.

Also know that our Executive Director, Susan Franano would like to continue discussions with you about the arts in general and more specifically the TSO. You can reach her through her assistant, Becky Tobin at 792-9155 x115. She will be expecting you to call.

Some of the issues/questions we discussed include:

1. Competition from a proposed similar facility being planned in Oro Valley

2. Location could be a distraction from development of downtown and downtown redevelopment is very important to the arts.

3. Summer would not be the ideal season to hold outdoor performances (especially as a destination activity).

4. Do we know for certain that the facility will NOT be used for Spring Training, which could be a deterrent?

I’m a registered Democrat and almost always vote Democrat. I’d just like to encourage you to be more specific and vocal about your positions on the issues. If you come out strongly on the issue of supporting neighborhoods and quality of life for Tucsonans, I believe you can get the support of many in our community including Democrats. My impression has been, however, that the Republican party usually sides with the Developers and business interests, not the little guy. The Republican party might not like you if you take a clear stand against Developers takeover of our City, but I believe that there are a lot of people like me who are sick and tired of the way this issue plays out again and again!

It doesn’t surprise me that Shirley Scott gets money from Don Diamond. She has not been an effective advocate…. Don Diamond almost always gets his way with GTEC, Business and Government interests in Arizona and D.C. I understand he pretty much controlled Jim Kolbe.

So I’m really disappointed with both Democrats and Republicans in this City. I hope you’ll consider taking on this really big issue. Someone needs to and Shirley Scott is not going to.
